Loneliness had consumed Maria as Halloween approached.
During the school Halloween Parade she had noticed that the other children gathered in clumps, excited laughter bursting out from within one group and then another.
It was the same at the pumpkin patch. Maria watched silently as children energetically ran after each other up and down the hay bales: they animated the corn fields as they took to the mazes in packs, creating a constant rustle through the bone-dry stalks.
It had always been the same for Maria but Halloween had always been her favorite holiday: this time of year her solitude acquired a particular seasonal sting.
It all culminated on Halloween Night when she was forced to take to the streets alone.
Her parents knew how it was for Maria. Often they'd encourage her to stay at home and hand out candy in order to spare her, but Maria knew that they knew, and somehow having to face her peers' socializing face to face while they belted "Trick or Treat" at her felt much worse.
So Maria wandered the streets alone, taking time to admire particularly well-carved Jack-o-Lanterns and to savor the heady spice of Autumn's night air.
She also chose a costume with a mask, in part because it felt right but also so that her classmates wouldn't recognize her.
Despite this, she was recognized.
But not by the other children.
Forces beyond her understanding had seen her deep friendlessness and her yearning and, just as importantly, they had recognized that Maria was profoundly aware of Halloween's more sacred qualities.
And then Maria saw them, too.
She was nervous at first, but as they floated and flitted near, she felt something she had never felt before:
included.
She now knew how the other kids felt in their clumps and clicks.
And she was SO happy that this year she wouldn't have to Trick or Treat alone.
